Why are there computer idiots in this world?

Today is saturday, meaning that it's my rest day. As everyone knows, i work everyday and so the weekends are the days when i look forward to sleeping late and waking up even later.

Not today. I promised samuel's friend alexis that i would go do her internet (windows xp's ICS). I had helped her before (i charged a measly 10 bucks the previous time which good ol' Sam paid secretly for her). Alexi's main comp had virus and she had to reformat her pc and thus she asked me if there's anything to note down before she format the computer. I told her to just format, and when she finished, call me and i will run through via phone how to set up the connection. Then yesterday on the way home, i thought that since i'm a bit free today, that i could help her do. Ok. So i woke up at 10 (quite early for me as i had slept at 3.40am on friday to set up my old computers and try some new linux distros such as damn small linux and feather linux and xandros) and then went to jurong west to her hse. Ok, settled the Windows xp ICS thing pretty quickly. To set up ICS, read this.

Then went to Jurong Point to meet soo yam's fren Kris to install ram for her. Her brother was with her and OMG he stinks. Ok, to be precise, his shirt stinks. Believe me, its hard to concentrate on removing the ram slots on a laptop when the aroma in the air is stinky. After unscrewing the laptop, i could not pull out the metal plate covering the ram slots easily and i told kris that i would go her hse (she lives a few blocks away from bren) later to install for her as i would need to consult the toshiba user guide again). Ok, at 3.45pm, i reached her hse and in 3 mins, had finished installing her ram. Then she casually asked me if i could help her do up her wireless router that she had bought, but could not configure. I'm meeting an old sec fren at 5pm at orchard, and i knew that i would be late if i were to help kris. But wtf, i still went ahead and helped her. Cos i hate to not render help when i could. Sigh. Her bro still stinks, though not as bad as earlier. His desktop was a dell pentium 4 1.8ghz with 128Mb ram. 128!!! Its so cruel to have only 128mb ram. ITS FREAKING UNBELIEVABLY SLOW. AND BELIEVE ME, WHEN U ARE RUSHING FOR TIME, THE LAST THING THAT YOU WANT TO DO IS TO WAIT FOR THE FREAKING COMPUTER TO BOOT UP. HIS INTERNET EXPLORER WAS HIJACKED AND EVERYTHING IS JUST DAMN DAMN DAMN FUCKING SLOW. A REAL TEST OF MY PATIENCE. Pentium 4s are NOT supposed to be that slow. And his shirt stinks.

Any way, the problem that caused her wireless not to work with the desktop pc (connected via straight lan cable) is because THE DESKTOP PC'S IP ADDRESS WAS SET TO 192.168.0.1 BECAUSE THEY ARE USING WINDOWS XP ICS PREVIOUSLY. the desktop acts as a host machine, hence the fixed ip) but when you connected to a router, you are supposed to set it to DHCP.

READ THE FUCKING MANUAL. On the manual of the prolink wireless router that they purchased, it says "GO TO WINDOWS TCP/IP SETTINGS AND SET UR PC TO DHCP. I REPEAT: DHCP". Please RTFM before asking!

OH, and of course i set up mac access control for the wireless router to only accept the mac address of the cisco wireless card that kris has. Wanna bet? She'll prob call me when she changes wireless card or something cos the wireless router will only accept THAT PARTICULAR wireless card and nothing else. For the uninitiated, mac access control means this.

It was 4.55 when i left her hse. Took cab to town, costing me 13 bucks. WOrth it or not?

At 7.40, my fren left and i called up brenda. Her internet connection has problem and she cannot access her company's intranet on the company's laptop. WTF. I took a combination of bus and mrt BACK TO her house.

Reached her place at 9pm tired and hungry. Haven had dinner. I gaved her a fuck face when i saw her and proceeded to see her laptop. I ran start==>run==>cmd==>"pconfig /all" and realised that her LAN connection has no DHCP gateway. WTF. She's connecting directly via cable modem ethernet port. I went over to the cable modem and saw 2 orange lights. ITS IN STANDBY MODE. WAT THE FUCK! HER INTERNET IS DOWN BECAUSE HER BRO ACCIDENTALLY SWITCHED OFF THE MODEM. KNN. I Turned it on and viola it works again.

Remarks:Oh, she enquired about wireless and hinted that she may ask me to do it. Can, no problem. 100 dollars min.

2: Kris (soo yam's friend).
What: Wireless
Stupidity index (or STFW index): 8/10.
Fault index: 2/10.
Remarks: SET ALL CLIENT PCS TO DHCP AND the router will be able to assign ips to each pc.

3: Bren
What: Internet connection cock up
Stupidity index (or STFW index): 10/10.
Fault index: 10/10.
Remarks: CHECK THE BLOODY POWER!!!!!

I'm sure u can read the manual and got any problems just ask me over lunch in sch or call me. dun sms me. hehe

No more free internet services (wired or wireless) from me unless you pay.

On a side note: i wanted to buy more rams from my source and of course i asked some friends if they are interested. As the message was time sensitive, i requrested in the smses sent that they reply me before the night is over. Smsed a few and knn all ignore my smses. Only a few frens had the decency to reply. Oh well. NEXT TIME DUN CALL ME ASKING ME FOR "EH do you still sell thumb drives or do you have XXX or YYY?" KNN. Go fuck yourself with a sugar cane first. The latest reply i had was 9pm today (about 20 hrs late). Oh well.
